What Is Direct Primary Care? A Complete Guide

Discover how Direct Primary Care makes healthcare more personal with longer appointments, direct physician access, and a relationship built around you.

If you've ever left a doctor's appointment feeling rushed, waited weeks to be seen, or wished you had more time to ask questions, you're not alone.

For many people, that's become the expectation. Appointments feel shorter, physicians seem busier, and getting personalized care can feel harder than it should.

Direct primary care, often called DPC, offers a different approach.

Instead of building care around insurance billing, direct primary care allows physicians to focus on what matters most: building relationships with their patients. Through a simple monthly membership, patients receive comprehensive primary care, longer appointments, easier access to their physician, and care that's designed around their individual needs—not the clock.

At Bridge Family Health, that's exactly what we're here to provide.

What Is Direct Primary Care?

Direct Primary Care is a membership-based model of primary care.

Rather than billing your insurance company every time you come into the office, you pay a predictable monthly membership directly to your physician. That membership covers most of your routine primary care needs, allowing your doctor to spend less time on paperwork and more time caring for you.

The result is a healthcare experience built on accessibility, prevention, and long-term relationships. This relationship-centered approach reflects the core principles of family medicine, which emphasizes comprehensive, continuous care for patients of all ages throughout every stage of life, as described by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Many patients describe it as having the family doctor they remember growing up with, combined with the convenience and communication they expect today.

How Does Direct Primary Care Work?

Getting started is simple.

Schedule a Complimentary Meet & Greet

Before becoming a member, you'll have the opportunity to meet with one of our physicians, tour the office, ask questions, and decide whether Bridge Family Health is the right fit for you and your family.

Become a Member

Once you join, you'll pay a monthly membership fee that covers your primary care.

There are no copays for office visits and no surprise bills for routine care.

Build a Relationship With Your Physician

As a member, you'll have access to longer appointments, same- or next-day scheduling whenever possible, direct communication with your physician, and care from someone who truly knows your health history, goals, and concerns.

What Is Included With a Direct Primary Care Membership?

While every direct primary care practice is a little different, members at Bridge Family Health receive comprehensive primary care designed around prevention and long-term wellness.

That includes services like:

  • Annual check-ups & preventive care

  • Sick visits

  • Preventive care

  • Chronic disease management

  • Medication management

  • Care coordination

  • Routine office procedures

  • Direct communication with your physician

Our goal isn't simply to treat illness. It's to help you stay healthy throughout every stage of life. Preventive care plays an important role in helping people stay healthier over time, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends regular preventive services to help detect health concerns early and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

Can I Still Use My Health Insurance?

Yes.

This is one of the most common questions we hear.

Direct primary care is not health insurance, and it doesn't replace coverage for major medical needs such as hospitalizations and surgeries.

If you have health insurance, you can still use it for things like:

  • Hospitalizations

  • Emergency care

  • Specialist visits

  • Imaging, including MRIs and CT scans

  • Surgeries

  • Prescription coverage, depending on your plan

The difference is that your primary care relationship is no longer tied to insurance billing.

Instead of spending time documenting visits to satisfy insurance requirements, your physician can spend that time focused on you.

Why Are More People Choosing Direct Primary Care?

For many patients, it comes down to time and access.

Traditional primary care physicians often care for up to 2000 patients, making it difficult to spend as much time with each person as they'd like.

Direct primary care practices intentionally maintain smaller patient panels. That allows physicians to offer:

  • Longer appointments

  • Easier scheduling

  • More personalized care

  • Better continuity

  • Stronger patient relationships

When your physician knows you beyond your medical chart, conversations become more meaningful, and care becomes more proactive.

Is Direct Primary Care Affordable?

Yes. One of the biggest misconceptions about membership models is that they are only for people with a high income. In reality, DPC was designed to make high-quality primary care more accessible by offering a more affordable price point ($85 per month) than concierge practices (~$500 per month).

Many of our patients have traditional health insurance, while others have high-deductible plans or no insurance at all. Regardless of your situation, our goal is to make it easier to build a lasting relationship with a physician who knows you and is there when you need care.

Is Direct Primary Care Right for You?

Direct primary care can be a great fit for many different people, including:

  • Individuals looking for a long-term primary care physician

  • Families who want one practice for children and adults

  • Adults managing chronic conditions

  • Patients who value preventive care

  • Small business owners looking for healthcare options for employees

  • Anyone who wants easier access to their physician

If you're looking for a healthcare experience that's more personal, more accessible, and centered around your relationship with your doctor, direct primary care may be exactly what you've been searching for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is direct primary care the same as concierge medicine?

Not quite.

Both models emphasize personalized care and improved access, but many concierge practices either still bill insurance in addition to charging a membership fee, or they charge much higher monthly fees (~$500 per month). Bridge Family Health follows the direct primary care model, which means your membership supports your primary care directly rather than billing insurance for office visits.

Can I still see specialists?

Absolutely. If you need specialty care, we'll help coordinate your referral and continue working alongside your specialists.

How long are appointments?

One of the biggest advantages of direct primary care is having the time to focus on your health. Appointments are intentionally designed to allow for meaningful conversations rather than feeling rushed.

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes. We welcome individuals, families, and employers throughout Evanston, Skokie, and the surrounding communities.
